We have been proud to serve the UK since the 1800s. That is a long time and means we have a lot of experience in our field. Our speciality is supplying a wide array of metal products. This includes quality grade 5083 aluminium bar and plate. On top of that we can offer a series of specialist services such as machining, heat treatment, and polishing.
You can find marine grade aluminium sheets primarily in Al-Si, Al-Mg, and Al-Cu alloys. These display outstanding corrosion resistance in marine settings. As a result, they are a great choice for all kinds of products.
The 5083 alloy in particular has a wide range of applications in the shipbuilding industry. It has extensive use in fishing boats, yachts, and cruise ships. This material is lightweight too, and comes in handy for enhancing service life and ship speed. As well as the decent workability, the grade has a series of other benefits. We will look at these below.
Corrosion resistance
Firstly, as we said above, this material has great corrosion resistance. Due to the high magnesium content, alloy 5083 does very well at resisting rust. In addition, it has decent adaptability to the extreme environment in the ocean. Contact us if you require grade 5083 aluminium bar and plate.
Weldability
It is a well known fact that aluminium alloys have high metal activity. Thus, it is usually hard to weld. With alloy 5083 however, the welding performance is excellent. High temperatures won’t influence the joints either. The elongation, tensile properties, and yield strength won’t change much.
Hot and cold forming performances
Ships have to experience hot and cold processing during their construction. As such, marine aluminium alloys must be easily formed and processed without cracks. If you have 5083 plates, they will be able to meet these specifications.
Durability
Grade 5083 aluminium bar and plate won’t rot and has excellent wear resistance. It can endure temperatures of -200ºC too. What this means is that vessels that use the alloy will be able to put up with harsh weather, no matter where they go. A vessel will have a superior design stress level when you compare to other alloys too.
There are also some other specific reasons why alloy 5083 is so popular for shipbuilding. One of these is because it is high strength and low density. The plates are also environmentally and economically friendly, and durable.
During the production process for alloy 5083 sheets, a minor amount of Beryllium (Be) is added. This is done to lower the cracking tendency. Furthermore, it augments the surface quality.
Finally, 5083 alloy products are of a greater quality in general. There are no burs, heat cutting edges, rolling marks, or scratches. Additionally, there won’t be any waves or oil spots.
