One of the most important aspects of engineering is ensuring that structures and systems will be able to handle the loads. Choosing the right materials is vital here so you can be sure they have the correct characteristics. If you have concerns about impact loading in particular, Grade BS1400 (PB1) phosphor bronze solid bar can be a great choice.
What is it?
Some people may not know what the term impact loading means. In a basic sense it is the sudden application of a load. This generates transient stresses (those that only last a short time). The suddenness of the loads and the stress can result in deformation. If the material does not have high resistance to it, there can be a catastrophic failure.
The main problem is that people often assume that they are dealing with static loading. What happens here is the loads are applied slowly and gradually. This is much different to a sudden impact. So, if you select a material with this in mind and don’t consider impact loading, there can be massive issues.
How to resolve it?
There are a number of things you can do to address the risks. As we said above, the main one is to choose materials with a high resistance to impact loading. Grade BS1400 (PB1) phosphor bronze solid bar is great here. The alloy is copper and tin. It has high mechanical strength and wear resistance. As a result, it can withstand impact loads.
It is also a good idea to orient materials so they are in line with the impact force from the sudden loading. This is much better than impacts occurring at right angles. It will maximise the strength.
You can also increase the length of a bar. Hypothetically if you could double the length, you could double the resistance. However, this can be tricky in many situations because of size limitations and costs.
The most common option is to choose shock absorbers. The idea here is to install them to absorb the stress and eliminate the deformation from sudden loading.
Do you want to order Grade BS1400 (PB1) phosphor bronze solid bar?
If you have an engineering project in mind and need to select a material with high resistance to impact loading, this bronze could be exactly what you need. We are proud to supply the bars in a range of sizes. They are great for all kinds of applications, particularly marine equipment because of the corrosion resistance. You can use the material for flanges, bearings, gears, valves, and much more.
