We are an expert metal provider working to give clients products for all kinds of applications. They include many titanium forged and machined parts. For instance, should you need flanges, we can arrange everything. You can expect them to be the highest quality too.
What is a titanium flange?
Flanges may not look like much, but they are actually a really important part of pipelines. They allow you to easily connect pipes with other things. For example, you can do pipe to pipe connections or use them for connecting to pressure vessels, valves, and fittings.
There are some important details with flanges, particularly when it comes to connecting them. It is possible to choose welding or threaded connection. With the latter, you need a pair of flanges with holes, several nuts and bolts, and a gasket. You position the gasket between the two flange sealing surfaces. After you tighten the nuts, the particular pressure on the gasket surface gets to a specific value. From here, deformation happens. The uneven parts on the sealing surface get filled, giving you a tight connection.
What we are going to do now is go into detail on the performance characteristics of titanium flanges. The information will help you to see why they are such a good option. Then if you need titanium forged or machined parts, especially flanges, you can speak to us.
Strength and density
For one thing, titanium flanges are incredibly strong. Some high strength alloys surpass the performance of various structural steel alloys. Titanium’s density is around 4.51g/cm3. This is only 60% of steel. Pure titanium’s density is near to that of ordinary steel. So, you can choose titanium and be confident in the strength and durability.
High temperature performance
The flanges come with high temperature performance too. Titanium still has the means to preserve the necessary strength at medium temperatures. It is able to work at 450-500ºC for an extended period.
Corrosion resistance
Titanium flanges also have great corrosion resistance to chlorine organic materials, chloride, alkali, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and more. There are alloys that function effectively in seawater mediums and humid atmospheres. Notably, the corrosion resistance of many types of titanium is far superior to stainless steel’s. The resistance to pitting corrosion is particularly strong. The same goes for stress corrosion. Come to us for titanium forged and machined parts like flanges.
Low temperature performance
Next, titanium flanges possess decent low temperature performance. They can maintain impressive mechanical properties at low and ultra-low temperatures. For one thing, alloys possessing excellent low temperature attributes and very low interstitial elements can keep a specific plasticity at -253ºC.
High chemical reactivity
Titanium flanges also have a strong chemical reaction with O and N. The same goes for CO2, Co, H, ammonia, and water vapour. This is actually beneficial though. When the temperature exceeds 600ºC, the titanium will absorb oxygen. It will then produce a surface layer with greater hardness. When the hydrogen content goes up, a brittle layer will form too. The depth of the brittle and hard surface layer can reach 0.1-0.15mm, with the hardening degree being 20-30%.
Thermal elasticity
Finally, the thermal elasticity of titanium flanges is small. Titanium’s thermal conductivity is 15.24w/(m.k). This is about 1/4 that of nickel, 1/14 that of aluminium, and 1/5 that of iron. The elastic modulus of titanium alloy is around 1/2 that of steel. Thus, the rigidity isn’t good and it’s easy to deform. Remember to take this into account when considering applications.
