The trouble with metal fabrication is that it is a broad term. It refers to any procedure that can mould, shape, or cut semi-finished or raw substances to create final products. There are all sorts of operations to choose from here. The process you use will largely depend on the end product you need and metal you work with.
One type of fabrication is machining. It is a popular option because it is also very broad and can offer solutions for lots of issues. Read on to learn more about it and why it could be the right choice for your project.
What is machining?
This is the procedure of shaping metal by getting rid of the undesired material. You can accomplish that in multiple ways, such as milling, turning, and drilling. Sometimes you may need to use all of them to get the right results.
Drilling makes use of a rotary cutting utensil, which is the drill bit, to cut a hole in the metal. Your drill bit shall press against the metal while it is rotating at incredibly high speeds. This will generate a circular hole.
Turning makes use of a lathe for rotating the metal. At the same time, a cutting tool moves linearly to get rid of the metal along the diameter. This produces a cylindrical shape.
Finally, milling uses rotating multi-point cutting tools. They remove material from the workpiece in a progressive fashion until you obtain the necessary shape. There are three ways to do this. Firstly, you can feed the metal slowly into the cutting tool. Or you can move the tool across the stationary metal. The tool and workpiece can also be moved in relation to one another if you need to.
