Properties of grade 420 stainless steel
Higher carbon 420 stainless steel is a very popular grade. It comes with a minimum chromium content of 12%. Similar to other grades, it is possible to harden 420 via heat treatment. There is decent ductility when it is in its annealed condition. When it is hardened, surface grounded, or polished, there is also a high degree of corrosion resistance. Of all the grades possessing 12% chromium, this one has the greatest hardness.
When under hardened conditions, this grade is resistant to a host of things. That includes mild acids, fresh water, foods, air, and alkalis. Those grades possessing a smooth surface finish offer outstanding performance. One detail to note is that grade 420’s corrosion resistance attributes have a habit of falling. This is when they are under annealed conditions.
Applications
As for applications, this grade of steel has a handful to speak of. The most common is for items like table and carving knives. Other good examples would be surgical equipment, shear blades, and needle valves.
With heat resistance, grade 420 stainless steel can achieve scaling resistance. It is at temperatures as far as 650ºC. Something to remember though is temperatures exceeding the regular tempering temperature are not appropriate for the grade.
