What is it?

This grinding process is different to most other ones because the work piece is not in a fixed position. Instead it sits between two rollers. The controller side turns at a speed to rotate the bar. The other side has the grinding wheel so it can do the cutting. It can rotate at a faster speed if necessary. There is also a workblade beneath the bar to support it.

What are the benefits?

There are many fantastic advantages with centreless grinding. Firstly, it can allow much higher production. There are two reasons for this. For starters there is no need to clamp the bar in place. This means it takes less time to load and unload bars. The second way the process improves productivity is that you can use throughfeed to work on really long bars.

Another big benefits with centreless is that the set up provides more stability for the workpiece. The regulating wheel and workblade will provide the best support. This will even offset the grinding forces. As a result it can prevent torsional stress and deformities. The support can be for the whole bar or almost all of it if you are using throughfeed to work on a huge section.

A third benefit is the grinding is incredibly accurate. This is because there is actually a smaller grinding allowance so issues are less likely. You can be very precise even if you are finishing a bar and working to very tight tolerances. The set up also reduces the potential for infill errors.
